System Engineer

Brompton is seeking a System Engineer to join our Electric Systems department. This open System Engineer role will be the focal point for the second generation of the Brompton drive system. The System Engineer will be required to deliver the system into new projects, and to champion change and improvements once in service. During the development phase, the successful candidate will work closely with the lead product design engineer on the target bicycle project to capture their requirements & support the system’s mechanical integration into bikes. Within the Electric Systems team, the System Engineer will work closely with the software and electronic engineers to ensure the system is ready to deliver a delightful electric-assisted cycling experience to thousands of riders. Once the system is in production, the System Engineer will continue to monitor the system performance and will work with key stakeholders in Customer Service, Product Management, Manufacturing Engineering, and Quality to ensure nothing holds the system back from fulfilling its potential throughout its market life.   • Broad engineering experience covering electric, software and mechanical products
  • Full lifecycle experience on similar embedded electronic products
  • Ability to estimate costs & timelines and to manage project priorities
  • Understanding of system engineering principles
  • Experience in capturing and maintaining requirements using requirements management software
  • Experience of authoring technical documents recording validation & verification type activities
  • Excellent ability to prepare technical communication for an audience unfamiliar with hardware and software development, including presentations and strategic summaries
  • Understanding of engineering drawing control and ability to understand mechanical drawings & circuit schematics is essential
  • Familiarity with a 3D CAD package, ideally Solidworks, would be an advantage
  • Familiarity with electric pedal assisted bicycle technology is an advantage

Job requirements


The general duties and responsibilities are:

  • Act as the project/system focal for ES to other departments
  • Own the system requirements including their generation, maintenance and traceability
  • Ensure required technical documentation is produced, liaising with Quality to keep the technical file up to date
  • Determine needs for development and test equipment

When the system is in its development phase the focus of the System Engineer shall be upon:

  • Capturing requirements from stakeholders around the business for the system to be viable and successful, including where these requirements exist outside the scope of a specific project
  • Being the bridge between the bike project team and the Electric Systems department
  • Ensuring the impacts and viability of different requirements are communicated through to bicycle development projects to shape design decisions
  • Ensuring the timings, priorities, and remit of system improvements are agreed with the embedded engineering team
  • Supporting the embedded engineers to navigate technical blockers and problems encountered on the way
  • Managing the selection of any relevant off-the-shelf components and outsourced technologies (such as motors, batteries, controls, lights, etc.) to compliment in-house components, in order to build the best possible system
  • Lead verification testing & activity in conjunction with the Reliability team to ensure the system is properly tested to all required standards
  • Assist bike development projects as they go into production launch with provision of any system data or understanding required by other departments

When the assigned system is in its continuous improvement phase the focus of the System Engineer shall be upon:

  • Acting as a focal point for in-service system issues
  • Assisting and co-ordinating investigations into system issue root causes where needed
  • Monitoring incremental changes and chasing these through the relevant introduction processes to ensure their timely resolution
  • Review and respond to in-service performance data to determine Quality or Production improvement opportunities
  • Determine what data and trends are required from data analysis
  • Own the post launch roadmap of improvement with costs and timings


  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent.
  • 5 years of relevant industry experience
  • An interest in cycling and a passion for creating truly useful products that improve people’s lives
