This role will be focussed on automation of processes which may be new to Brompton, and possibly the bike industry, to deliver amazing new products. To do this, you will be working with a cross-functional team on materials, technology, supply chain, and design to deliver efficient, scalable, and capable automated processes which are appropriate for the challenges and constraints of our particular factory.

So far, our bikes have predominantly been manufactured from steel and titanium, however we’re always looking to use the right material in the right place, so knowledge of a variety of forming and joining processes will be essential. The ideal candidate will have experience of the full lifecycle of automation projects and be comfortable leading these activities in a manufacturing environment.

Main Duties

  • Collaborate with the Design and Engineering team to develop new products which can be manufactured efficiently in high volumes with automated processes.
  • Work in partnership with Product Designers, Industrial Designers, Structural Engineers, and other technical experts, and carefully balance their requirements with those of the manufacturing system.
  • Coordinate with our Materials and Technology team, research institutions, and potential suppliers to assess the suitability of new processes for production at Brompton.
  • Consult with the Tooling and Equipment team to produce specifications for bespoke tooling and equipment required to produce prototypes and production parts.
  • Research new advances in automation, Industry 4.0, and Smart Factory concepts, and assess their applicability and suitability to Brompton and bicycle manufacture.
  • Develop automated processes from a blank sheet of paper, through installation, testing, and development, to production ramp-up.
  • After a flawless launch, facilitate a smooth handover to the Production and Continuous improvement teams.
  • Ensure equipment is looked after properly by working with the Facilities and Maintenance team to develop TPM schedules.
  • Produce CAPEX budget requests and business cases.
  • Project manage your own projects, considering the requirements of other departments and the programme schedule.

Skills and Requirements

  • Experience in an Engineering or Manufacturing environment with automated systems.
  • Understanding of launching new products and processes.
  • An aptitude and appetite for research.
  • Knowledge of forming and joining metals.
  • Experience with CAD (we use SolidWorks).
  • Understanding of Lean principles and Six Sigma.
  • Exceptional self-motivation and a pro-active confidence needed to identify and prioritise work.
  • Project management skills and the foresight to consider future requirements.
  • A critical, methodical mind capable of weighing up complex scenarios.
  • A hands-on practical approach.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety law and best practice.
  • Good communication skills.
