Manufacturing Project Engineer

Job Purpose

Brompton Bicycle is going through a period of unprecedented growth. To support the growth in output, we are looking to transfer bodies of work and manufacturing processes to our supply chain and rationalise our internal processes. To facilitate this, we are forming a dedicated, autonomous team to produce defined work packages and to outsource them. This Manufacturing Engineering role will lead the small team which will include members from the Design, Supply chain and Quality Assurance departments.

Main duties

  • Develop a robust outsourcing process to be used as the project management framework
  • Lead and project manage the cross functional team through the various projects
  • Help develop the strategy for determining what is within the scope of the outsourcing project
  • Analyse internal processes and produce realistic cost models for make/buy decisions
  • Prioritise the list of processes for the team to tackle, using Value Stream Mapping
  • Produce and consult on the documentation within the work package, specifications, work manuals drawings to BS8888 and quality standards
  • Assist with supplier audits and provide Production Engineering advice during process consultations
  • Produce production impact analyses
  • Work with the supply chain team to determine packaging and delivery requirements
  • Ensure that the flow of outsourced products into the factory is streamlined and compliant with ERP requirements
  • Assist Quality Assurance with the PPAP of supplier produced parts, in particular functional tests within the factory
  • Work with Production teams to manage the changeovers in the factory
  • Organise the decommissioning of old equipment and removal of redundant processes
  • Ensure that thorough housekeeping of documentation is in place to facilitate the re-introduction of processes in the future along with traceability requirements

Skills and Requirements

  • Ability to lead a cross-functional team
  • Exceptional self-motivation and a pro-active confidence needed to identify and prioritise work
  • Project management skills and the ability to manage stakeholders
  • Good communication skills and the ability to produce concise and good quality project reports
  • Technical experience of LEAN principles and other manufacturing techniques
  • Problem solving experience using Root Cause Analysis, DMAIC or other methods
  • Excellent understanding of mechanical and engineering principles


The ability to demonstrate a solid engineering background in a relevant environment is essential, with at least 3-5 years’ experience in manufacturing with project management experience.
