JOB TITLE - Lead Structural Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION

Brompton has a renowned design that over the last 40 years has become recognised and respected around the world. We are now applying the latest engineering techniques, materials and advanced manufacturing methods to build new products to continue our success into the next decades. Brompton is seeking an outstanding experienced mechanical engineer to lead our structural engineering team. The successful candidate will use their expertise in engineering science and simulation tools to deliver outstanding engineering outcomes. You and your team will be responsible both for the development of innovative and highly optimised structural components and for supporting development teams across the business on their parts and projects. You will be a driver of engineering excellence and a technical and professional mentor for engineers in your teams and others.

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Excellent engineering science fundamentals; materials, stress, product life and failure, particularly fatigue failure.
  • Highly experienced in the use of FEA; being able to perform linear and non-linear structural analysis. This includes model creation, running/debugging analysis and confidently turning these results into tangible design-based decisions
  • Expert level user of the Altair Hyperworks suite;
    • o Setup and interpretation of linear finite element analysis using Hypermesh
  • o Setup and interpretation of topology optimisation studies in Optistruct
  • Post-processing in Hyperview
  • Experience in Simsolid and Inspire an advantage
  • Fatigue prediction from FEA results using Hyperlife an advantage
  • Experienced with CAD, preferably Solidworks
  • Experienced in correlating FEA results with lab tests and strain gauge data
  • Ability to research, select and implement new software analysis tools based on business requirements
  • Creation of high-quality technical reports
  • Sound understanding of metallic materials is essential, their properties and use.
  • Experience of developing around and optimising for manufacturing techniques:
    • Machining
  • Casting
  • Forging
  • Welding and brazing
  • Surface treatment
  • Heat treatment
  • Highly motivated, a self-starter and a self-learner
  • Non-linear FEA
  • Familiar with statistical techniques for managing and predicting reliability
  • Creating accurate load cases from instrumented products: gathering, processing, and using primary load data
  • Experience of composite materials
  • Management experience of a small engineering team
  • Familiarity with bicycle technology

ADVANTAGEOUS SKILLS:

  • Non-linear FEA
  • Familiar with statistical techniques for managing and predicting reliability
  • Creating accurate load cases from instrumented products: gathering, processing, and using primary load data
  • Experience of composite materials
  • Management experience of a small engineering team

Job requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND PERSONAL

Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline

A minimum of 7 years of relevant industry experience.
