The Role

The role is focused on leading the development of low-cost and high reliability electronics onto existing and future platforms, as well as development of internal prototypes and test equipment. It requires a good knowledge of power, digital and analog electronics as well as experience of leading small teams. This is a pivotal role in the creation and improvement of all Electric platforms within Brompton Bicycle, requiring an excellent candidate.

Main duties

  • Leading the development of low-cost & high reliability electronics into moderate volume markets (20k+ per year) through the entire engineering lifecycle
  • Designing, analysing, and verifying electronics for consumer facing products, internal prototypes and test equipment
  • Management of a small electronics team, including planning, tasking, and technical development
  • Driving improvements and quality into all aspects of Brompton’s electronics, including policy, process and detailed design
  • Working with Systems and Software engineers to develop requirements & architectures, resolve complex systematic issues and integrate software onto hardware.
  • Working with manufacturers to establish production lines and test equipment for electronic product lines

Job requirements

Essential Skills

  • Proven technical leadership of a small electronics team
  • Experience designing inverters and/or power electronics, microcontrollers, digital and analog electronics
  • Experience of either managing PCB layouts or doing them yourself
  • Experience designing for EMC in a power electronics context
  • Experience of working with electronic manufacturing in a moderate volume commercial or automotive context
  • Experience of defining and performing set-to-work and verification & validation, including simulation, worst-case analysis, bench testing
  • Comfortable working on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills

Desirable Skills

  • Ability/willingness to cycle
  • Knowledge and/or experience of Systems Engineering principles, e.g. Requirements, Traceability, etc
  • Experience working to safety standards, e.g. IEC61508, ISO26262, etc
  • Experience of selecting and specifying cabling & connectors
  • Knowledge of batteries and electric machines


Ideally the individual will have the following educational and professional qualifications or experience:

  • Degree education in related subjects (computer science, systems engineering, electronics, electrical engineering, mechatronics, etc).
  • The ability to demonstrate a solid engineering/technical background in a relevant environment.
  • The ability to demonstrate hands on experience in a similar role.
  • The successful candidate will have at least 5 years’ experience as an engineer, with technical leadership.
