The Brompton is the iconic product of its type, a unique bike used and loved in over forty countries around the world. Sales have grown rapidly over the last ten years, making us the largest bicycle manufacturer in the UK, with our products still designed and made by hand right here in London. Despite this we feel like we’re just getting started and there is huge potential to make our bike lighter, more capable and more fun to use.

As a design team we are passionate about making the best bike we can and approach this in an unusual way; we design all of our own components so we get exactly what we want and need them to be. Brompton is created by us from nose-to-tail.


We are seeking a technically and commercially skilled senior mechanical engineer to join our team and help deliver the next ten years of Brompton products. To reach the potential of the business we must adopt product designs and associated innovative manufacturing techniques that are highly scalable and deliver products with world-class quality at low cost.

The successful candidate will bring expertise in Non-ferrous Materials' design and manufacturing, automated production, high volume manufacturing, product development and materials selection to shape the engineering strategy for our future product pipeline and our manufacturing base. You will assess the suitability of new material options and manufacturing technologies for our future product needs. You will lead prototyping and testing to assess the engineering suitability of new technologies and run pilot studies to investigate promising options.



  • Experience in dealing with joining processes (brazing, welding,...) preferably automated.
  • Familiarity with design and manufacturing of Aluminium and/or other non ferrous metals' components
  • Familiarity with automated fabrication methods (forming, heat treatment, joining, cutting,...) preferably of Aluminium and/or Steel
  • Understanding of research processes, methodology, approach. Past experience in Research departments.
  • Project engineering/proj management knowledge (even if small projects). Preferably PRINCE2 or PMI/APM
  • Understanding of Lean Six Sigma approach (especially the measurements side of it, DOE, process mapping and problem solving)
  • Know how to use Minitab
  • Knowledge of DFMEA.


  • Mechanical Engineer/materials
  • Familiarity with the most common manufacturing processes.
  • Solid academic background in Mechanical engineering, with knowledge of chemistry or metallurgy or materials.
  • min 5 years experience in manufacturing environment (automotive, EOMS, ...)
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Commercial awareness.
  • Cost engineering awareness.
  • High volume production and DfMA.
  • Ability to interpret and read technical drawings
  • Need to master excel
  • Willingness to expand their knowledge in new manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to read scientific paper, to create technical reports and summaries.
  • Not afraid to learn or spend time reading books and researching.
  • Extremely good presentation skills
  • Good organisation skills (to manage projects with a very brief life cycle).
  • Proactive!
  • Basic knowledge of solidworks
  • Highly motivated, a self-starter and a self-learner
  • Very good communication skills and soft skills


  • Experience in a similar role ideally within automotive or consumer product development.
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD is an advantage, preferably Solidworks
  • Experience of developing product for high-volume product fabrication
  • Experience of developing product for and working with automated manufacturing technologies
  • A track record of successfully engaging with partner business and building productive relationships to develop parts or production technologies
  • Excellent engineering science fundamentals; materials, stress, product life and failure.
  • Experience of developing in structural materials, principally metals
  • Exposure to and experience of developing for relevant manufacturing techniques:
  • CNC
  • Casting and Forging
  • Welding and brazing
  • Surface treatment
  • Heat treatment
  • Robotic and automated production
  • Very commercially aware. Direct experience of accurately estimating and controlling
  • production and material costs in a project. Experience of owning bills of materials and using them as a project management tool.
  • Highly motivated, a self-starter and a self-learner
